You know how when you are flying in a bright system and you can't see if your modules are on and you can't see your cap? Well I thought it might be nice to have an Optional background that goes behind your modules with settings for color and transparency. I'm no artist, but I made a picture to show what I mean...I'm sure CCP devs can do better.
Then since I had the picture I thought I'd have some fun with it and came up with the idea to make it into a Dashboard. It would be totally optional with settings for light/dark and maybe there could be several dashboards to choose from.
Just something to liven up the inside of your ship since we spend so much time in them. I don't know if the devs could do it or not, but hey it's just an idea I had to make EVE a little more fun.

Yeah well that's why I suggested it as an option. I know not everyone would like to use it.

Yeah well like I said...I'm no graphics designer and I'm sure a better looking dashboard could be made by CCP. I just made that pic to give an idea of what the concept was.
Multiple monitor support would definatly be a big improvment. With all of the windows you need open like, overview, drones, local channel, corp channel, fleet channels, and such it leaves the screen very crowded especially if you don't have a widescreen monitor. Duel or even triple monitors would be great if you have the video cards to support it. |

Ok well I put a bit of a border around it and added a blinds effect that I think makes it look a bit better. See what you think.

Edited by: Commander Spectre on 05/10/2008 16:52:11 Ok I cleaned it up a little because the buttons came out a little transparent on the bottom. Here I used a nice bright background so you could see how much better the module buttons and capacitor readouts would show up.
Again I understand that not everyone will like it just as a matter of personal tastes. So it would be totally optional. I hope a dev can give me some feedback.

Ok...in a shamless effort to bump the topic I'll post another version of my idea with a new camoflage insert. Hope you like it.

Ok ya busted me...I'm a bit colorblind...lol. I tried to darken the wood pattern I have and got the wrong color :p
But I got more so here's another wood, stained wood is the pattern...and I didn't mess with the colors...

So you mean a background on the left side of the screen behind where it says how many more jumps and what the next system in route is then?...hmm...I would probably recommend a dark color for that because a pattern could make it hard to read. Like this...
You know I was thinking that there needs to be an indicator for drones to tell if they are active or passive. Also it would be nice to see thier health while in the drone bay. So I thought they could change the drones window like this...

Awesome stuff.
Well thank you very much In fact thanks to all the people in this thread for thier input.
I spent alot of time on the dashboards, I'm glad someone likes them. Really I just wanted to help the players and saw an easy way to fix some problems and add a little flair to the User Interface. While I still don't know if CCP will even consider them, at least I know some players are interested.

Well still no word from CCP in this. Come on devs, just post something so I know you at least looked at my thread.
Thanks

Yeah...I made them myself to show the possibilities. It is my hope that they would offer a few different dashboards so that people could choose one they liked. And yeah...I'm sure CCP could do a better job of it cuz I'm just working from screenshots...but they didn't come out all that bad.
They do get the job done though, as you can clearly see the modules and capacitor indicator would show up very well. I don't think it would be all that hard for CCP to just put an image behind them and add the drone options I showed.

Originally by: Kembla There is already an area where you can view the status of your drones. Click on the triangle to the left of "Drones (1 of max 5 in space)" to view the drone settings window.
Hmm...thanks for that info...I had not noticed that before. But you should still be able to see the drone health bars while they are in the drone bay like in my original picture. As it is now you have to guess which drones to launch before you can repair them or not launch the badly damaged ones to attack with.

Well I guess the whole ghost training thing was taking up all the devs time and they couldn't be bothered to look at any ideas...maybe now that they are done with that they can look at my idea and respond. So far player response has been favorable...dunno if that counts or anything though...

Originally by: Elena Morin'staal So, is this possible to make as a player mod, by any chance, or is it A, Impossible, or B, an exploit under EULA?
Assuming it was a legal, allowed and non buggy, I'd download this in a second.
Well as a player mod that you download that would depend on CCP and it could cause lag during session changes I would think. So I thought they could impliment it server side to save on lag.
Is it possible? - It would really just be an image placed behind the current readouts to give them a background to contrast to. There could be several to choose from or just blank to keep everything how it is for people who may not like the idea. So I think it should be possible in one form or another...still waiting for a dev to post and say if it is or not. While some players would probably like to make thier own custom dashboards I don't know if CCP would go for that...again I'm still hoping a dev will post to give some input.
I have made several to show what they could look like and I have several more if they are interested.
Is it legal, exploit, viloate the EULA? - No it's not ment to be any kind of expliot or anything illegal that violates the EULA. It should be made available to all players to give an even footing in the game. I would never suggest an exploit for EVE. This is only an improvement to the visual of the readouts intended to make them show more clearly so the player does not have to rotate his view to find a dark spot in space.

Well no it would not be third party software. Not software at all really. It was ment to be a feature the Devs could add. Like the settings for graphics in EVE to select a theme color for your windows color. They could just add images you could select as a background behind the modules readout.
So it's not really a mod either. Maybe they could make it so you could add your own images to the ones available in say the cache folder or something, but that would take a bit more doing and I really don't know if they would go for that. I leave the technical coding part up to them. All I did was modify a screenshot with paintshop to show what it would look like so they could get the idea.
